The Freedom Square is situated in the southern part of the city centre, almost on its edge. Surrounded by parks and art galleries, it is in the heart of the cultural district, with the Academy of Music and Theatre on one side and the National Opera from the other side. Apart from the Soviet period, the Freedom Square has always been used for important social and political events, parades, and meetings. Renovated in the 2000s, the square is today a lovely place to relax, walk, and have a rest in one of the numerous cafes nearby.
